March 23 is a day of celebration for every Pakistani, whether you live in Pakistan or abroad. For those of us living overseas, this momentous day is equally jubilant, not only because it brings with it a sense of celebration, but also because it provides us with an opportunity to connect with fellow Pakistanis in the countries of our residence. Work, family or professional commitments may have taken some of us away from our motherland, but I think I can speak for all overseas Pakistanis when I say that our hearts still beat with Pakistan. We remain closely connected and developments that are taking place in our country affect us. Therefore, this year when we celebrate our National Day, I can see a renewed sense of patriotism and jubilation among the Pakistanis who live in the Gulf region.
Movement towards progress and prosperity
Pakistan is on the right track, as it steadily moves towards stability, progress and prosperity, and encourages citizens. The prudent economic policies of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif are slowly but surely transforming Pakistan into an economic power. It renews their confidence when they see that the National Action Plan has united the country's political and military leadership to collectively address the issue of extremism. One of the largest military operations named Zarb-e-Azb, followed by the Rad-ul-Fassad, is aimed at restoring stability in Pakistan. The successful execution of these operations due to the efforts of the government, armed forces, paramilitary troops, police and all law-enforcing agencies have broken the back of extremist elements. Pakistan has turned the tide and is emerging gloriously in the comity of nations as a stable, progressive, and emerging nation.
Meaningful efforts are underway to revive the country's economy, restore investor confidence and expand trade globally. Pakistan boasts one of the highest foreign exchange reserves in history, and there is growing interest among foreign investors to take advantage of the business-friendly policies of the government. The massive investment from China in building the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor will be a game changer for Pakistan and the region.
In addition to this, the government is providing innovative incentives to businessmen, investors and traders to encourage them to take part in the economic development. The government is following a policy of liberalisation, de-regulation and transparency, and efforts are being undertaken to improve governance. This has resulted in global recognition of Pakistan when it was upgraded to the status of "Emerging Economy" by leading credit rating agencies.
China-Pakistan Economic Corridor
The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is at the centre of the government's journey towards making Pakistan an 'Economic Power'. This megaproject will connect the Gwadar Port to China through a network of roads and railroads as well as pipelines, and provide much-needed access to China and some Central Asian states to the world's largest deep-sea port. This will boost trade and communication between Pakistan, China and the region. The estimated $46 billion investment coming from China will open the door to abundant opportunities for Pakistan, create thousands of jobs and boost Pakistan's economy. Earlier this month, Pakistan hosted the ECO Summit in which presidents, prime ministers and ministers from regional countries, particularly the Central Asian States, actively took part. Their growing interest in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is a clear indication that all of these important regional economies can see that the future of regional trade is through Pakistan. The Prime Minister has encouraged friends and allies in the region to be part of Pakistan's success story and take advantage of the opportunities that CPEC offers.
Pakistan's growing relations with GCC
Pakistan values its close brotherly ties with the UAE and GCC countries. Our relations have their foundations firmly rooted in history. We share the same faith and our heritage is the same; we celebrate the same festivals and adhere to the same social and cultural values. Just like we fast together and celebrate Eid together, we also celebrate the many common social festivities that connect us at every level. Our economic and trade relations are historic, and the GCC is one the largest trading partners of Pakistan. More than four million Pakistani expats live in the GCC. Just like our histories are connected, our futures are also connected. Pakistan regards the stability of the GCC as the stability of Pakistan, and we will continue to ensure that we remain closely connected. The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (may God give him highest place in Paradise) is highly regarded in Pakistan and the people admire the visionary leadership of The President, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, for their continued and gracious efforts to keep our countries and people together.
A promising future
This year, on Pakistan National Day, the people of Pakistan feel delighted to see the country emerging as a stable democracy, empowering its people through education, employment and entrepreneurship. Our political and military leadership are on the same page and working closely together in building a stable and crime-free Pakistan with zero-tolerance for extremism and corruption.
Our economy is emerging, trade is on the increase, foreign exchange reserves stand at historic levels, and international investors are showing growing confidence in the opportunities that Pakistan offers. This year, as a nation of 200 million people, we celebrate National Day with renewed jubilation.
