Most of us who love to travel, love to bring a lot of things. A single look at Dubai's airports alone show many expats carrying their luggage filled to brim with goodies to send home.
\While it is a sweet sight to see, the airport usually has guidelines on what can and cannot be brought on the plane. Halfway across the world, a mother was seen crying because a flight attendant took her baby's pram off the plane. This raises the question: "So what exactly can I take inside an airplane?" Here's what Dubai Airports and Emirates have to say.

Five things you CANNOT carry

Hoverboards
According to both Emirates and flydubai websites, Hoverboards and other self-balancing transport cannot be brought into flights. They cannot be in either check-in or carry-on baggage because they contain large lithium batteries which are known to be flammable. The rule also applies if you're using a UAE airline as a connecting flight from an airline that has accepted it.
Gifts worth more than Dh3000
According to Dubai Airports, gifts exceeding Dh3000 are not allowed through customs.
Electronic devices
Do you have a flight from the UAE to the United States? If so, you are not allowed to bring electronic devices larger than a smartphone in your carry-on baggage. This comes after the United States introduced a ban on devices larger than smartphones that applies to 10 countries in the MENA region.
Ivory
Dubai Airports also stipulates that ivory is not allowed on airplanes. This also applies to rhino horns. An InterNations guide adds that special permission might be required for ivory-keyed pianos.
A certain size of luggage
The Emirates website states that Economy flyers can only bring one carry-on bag. The size of such carry on should be 22x15x8 inches and it must weigh no more than 7kg. If you're flying Business or First Class, you're in luck as you're allowed two carry-on bags.

Five things you CAN carry

Musical Instruments
Some musical instruments are hefty. To that effect, they can only be allowed inside the plane on a separate seat. This separate seat is treated as another booking, so, technically, you're buying another ticket.
Duty Free purchases
Certain Duty Free items are only allowed in reasonable quantities. If you have bought liquids, they have to be not more than 100ml and in transparent containers.
Sports gear
Like musical instruments, certain sports gear might require you to buy another ticket. But for the others, they are merely subject to the same size restrictions as other forms of cabin baggage.
Medical equipment
According to both Emirates and flydubai, certain medical devices are allowed inside the plane. There are certain exemptions to the rule, but both airlines note that proper documents have to be presented to justify bringing it on board. This applies mainly to hypodermic needles and syringes.
Prams
Prams are allowed on Emirates flights if the passenger is carrying an infant. However, they have to be fully collapsible. A carry cot is also allowed.
