Google's new CEO Sundar Pichai comes from a humble background. We take a look at his educational background and innings at Google:

Education: Born in Chennai, India, he earned his Bachelor of Engineering degree from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) in Metallurgical Engineering. He later pursued an MS from Stanford University in Material Sciences and Engineering and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was named a Siebel Scholar and a Palmer Scholar. He did his schooling from Chennai at Jawhar Vidyalaya and VanaVani. Pichai worked in engineering and product management at Applied Materials and in management consulting at McKinsey & Company.


Career before Google: Sundar Pichai has earlier worked for McKinsey & Company in management consulting. He has also worked in engineering and product management at Applied Materials.

Innings at Google: Pichai joined Google in 2004 and worked on popular products like Toolbar, and also others like Google Gears and Google Pack, before Chrome was launched. Pichai is popular for having led product management and innovation of Google's client software products such as Google Chrome and Chrome OS. In 2008, he was appointed as VP of product development and introduced Chrome browser. It was soon followed by Chrome OS in 2009. By 2012, he was the Senior VP of Chrome and apps. He was appointed as Android chief in 2013.


Eric Schmidt, former executive chairman at Google, will now become the executive chairman of Alphabet. He tweeted out the announcement, saying: "Really excited about the vision and brilliance of Sundar .. he's going to be a great CEO!"

Other Indians at Google top positions

Amit Singhal, Senior Vice President, Search and Google Fellow:Born in Jhansi, a city in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India, Singhal received a Bachelor of Engineering degree in computer science from IIT Roorkee in 1989.He continued his computer science education in the United States, and received an M.S. degree from University of Minnesota Duluth in 1991. It's his team that controls how search results appear on the search engine.

Sanjay Ghemawat, Senior Fellow:He has been working at Google since late 1999 on distributed systems, performance tools, indexing systems, compression schemes, memory management, data representation languages, RPC systems, and other systems infrastructure projects. He graduated with a Ph.D. in Computer Science from MIT. Before joining Google, he was a member of the research staff at DEC Systems Research Center in Palo Alto, CA.

Sridhar Ramaswamy, Senior Vice President, Ads & Commerce:Ramaswamy served as Senior Vice President of Engineering of Google Inc. He served as Vice President of Engineering of Google Inc. Since joining Google in 2003, Ramaswamy and his teams have taken a lead role in defining the vision and direction of AdWords. Prior to joining Google, he held several roles at E.piphany, Bell Labs, Lucent Technologies and Bell Communications Research (Bellcore). He earned a bachelor's degree in computer science from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras. He received his Ph.D. and master's degree in computer science from Brown University.

K. Ram Shriram, Board of Directors:He has served as a member of our board of directors since September 1998. Ram has been a managing partner of Sherpalo Ventures, LLC, an angel venture investment company, since January 2000. From August 1998 to September 1999, Ram served as Vice President of Business Development at Amazon.com, Inc., an e-commerce company. Prior to that, Ram served as President at Junglee Corporation, a provider of database technology, which was acquired by Amazon.com in 1998. Ram was an early member of the executive team at Netscape Communications Corporation. Ram is also on the board of trustees of Stanford University. Ram holds a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from the University of Madras, India.
