Peace painting

Lubna Al-Midfa

4 November 2009

Here’s your chance to lend an artistic hand for peace at Qanat Al-Qasba

SAUDI ARTIST ABDUL Athem Al-Thamen has begun working on a 250-metre-long painting located by the waterfront in Al-Qasba, Sharjah. But this is a painting with a difference. Instead of displaying a single visual image promoting the message of love and peace, the artist is inviting the public to help complete the remaining 50 metres, thereby drawing community members from different nationalities and backgrounds to strike a common ground by painting together their aspirations for peace and love on the canvas. This would help reiterate the original aim of the event.

Students from local workshops, universities, colleges and schools are already part of the project. The event is also open to the public including families and children.

The opening ceremony, which will take place today (November 4) at 7pm, will be attended by Abdullah Al-Owais, the Director of the Department of Culture and Information at the Sharjah Government and Marwan Al-Serkal CEO of Sharjah Investment and Development Authority.

The public is invited to take part in the two-day event, from 9am to 12pm and 7pm to 10pm today and from 4-8pm on Thursday.

The painting is located outside block A by The Eye of The Emirates.
