CX-y time

The Mazda CX-9 turns out to be a bit of a diamond this week as we take it out for a jaunt around Dubai

‘Surprising,’ is the best word I can use to sum up the CX-9, very surprising. Crossover SUVs are very popular all over the world but here, when having an actual 4x4 is justifiable, the ones that market themselves as just as good as an off-roader are quickly found to be wanting. The CX-9 does not market itself in that way. You’re not going to find poster campaigns with it hanging off a cliff or driving up Everest in reverse. The CX-9 does exactly what it says on the box and that is being a large, comfortable family car suitable for every family occasion.

This somewhat refreshing approach to advertising endeared me to the car before I even stepped inside. Don’t get me wrong, many crossovers can hold their own on an easy off-road course but I wouldn’t trust all of them. Approaching the CX-9 for the first time I was struck by how good looking it was. Having a black model with its chrome highlights made it look all the more desirable and along with its low profile appearance, which makes the car look sleek and quick I had a feeling I was going to be in for a good time.

And to be honest there were absolutely no problems to report. What I got when driving around the CX-9 was exactly what I expected for its price and a little bit more. Okay so there are no gadgets like SatNav or a rear view camera, but then I didn’t expect those. What I did expect was comfort, space and a decent driving experience and the car delivered on all three in abundance. The 3.7 litre V6 made for a lot of enjoyment. Acceleration for such a large car was excellent and made journeys fun. Too often with cars of this type an insufficient engine is put in but Mazda have not skimped on the power and it really shows. The ride was incredibly smooth yet lively steering meant that it was not a question of just letting this thing drive you around. You still have to put in the effort so if you have always harboured dreams of owning a sports car but have a family that does not justify it then you won’t be too let down.

It doesn’t matter how large your family is either as the seven seats and vast cabin space would be enough to take care of the Waltons let alone any unit that resides around these parts.

Overall I would have to say this car exceeds expectations for its price and segment. If you’re in the market for a family carrier that gives you a great feeling and doesn’t adhere to the normal drab designs of most people carriers then this one is for you.
