A team of doctors in Britain were shocked to discover that 42-year-old woman's swollen eyelid was due to a contact lens that had been lying inside for 28 years.
Doctors thought it was a cyst that had grown over a six-month period.
When they performed the surgery for its removal, they found a rigid gas permeable contact lens, doctors Sirjhun Patel, Lai-Ling Tan and Helen Murgatroyd said in a report published on BMJ Case Reports.
However, the woman said she had not worn contact lenses in decades.
"It was later revealed that the patient experienced childhood trauma while wearing RGP contact lenses 28 years ago," the doctors wrote in the report.
"The patient assumed that the RGP lens fell out and was lost; however, it can be inferred that the lens migrated into the eyelid and resided there asymptomatically for 28 years," UPI quoted doctors' statement in the report.
