Stephen Hawking, English theoretical physicist, cosmologist, author and Director of Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology within the University of Cambridge, turns 74 on January 8.
Stephen William Hawking was born on 8 January 1942 (300 years after the death of Galileo) in Oxford, England.
He wanted to study Mathematics, although his father would have preferred medicine. Mathematics was not available at University College, so he pursued Physics instead.
Professor Hawking has twelve honorary degrees. 
Stephen was diagnosed with ALS, a form of Motor Neurone Disease, shortly after his 21st birthday.
Stephen Hawking has three children and three grandchildren
He still hopes to make it into space one day.
