The Uttarakhand High Court on Monday recognised the Ganges river as India's first living entity. The court legally recognized Ganga River as a person in a ruling today.
The river is considered sacred in the country and is one of India's largest rivers.
Earlier in the month, the high court came down strongly on the Uttarakhand state government for doing "nothing concrete" to clean the Ganga river. It added that not enough efforts were taken to maintain the River Ganga, which can again flow in its full glory. "The Ganga should be saved for the generations to come," the court reportedly said.
