To spread a word about food wastage and reducing carbon emission, a newly married couple in Leeds served wedding guests food meant to be thrown away. Moreover, their idea also helped them to save a fortune with the food destined for the bin.
James and Cherie Mainwaring roped in the Real Junk Food Project to serve delicious food to their 140 guests who were oblivious of what they were relishing. The menu at the wedding at East Keswick Village Hall in Leeds catered for vegetarians and vegans while their dessert was a tower of Gregg's doughnuts.
The buffet did not burn their pockets, as the Mainwarings paid only £5 per person with £6 for a hot buffet while the wedding breakfast saved nearly 80lbs of waste - which is around 150lbs of CO2 emissions or the equivalent of six days of electricity for the average household.
The bride who helped the environment by wearing a dress lined with bamboo pulp material said, "What is wonderful is that we were able to use our wedding to spread the word about food waste and make people think about using up their own leftovers." She added, "The food was absolutely beautiful and really made our day. We could not have asked for anything better."
The charity Real Junk Food Project collects food from supermarkets, sandwich shops and fast food outlets that fail health and safety standards, but is still legal and fit for human consumption. "You get a range of food that is beautiful, original and delicious," Cherie was quoted as saying in Metro.uk.
