Did you know that 25 per cent of workforce are in occupations that did not exist decades ago? The future is where you create knowledge and new professions. Generation Z, also known as the post-Millennial, are now in the process of getting ready for the labour market. Here are a few emerging career options that are more likely to be popular among the next generation.
Landscape Architecture
Landscape architects design parks and the outdoor spaces of school or college campuses, recreational facilities and private homes to make them beautiful as well as functional. A landscape architect must earn a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLA) or a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture (BSLA). You will spend four to five years taking classes in design, construction techniques, art, history, and natural and social sciences to complete either degree. Even without a Bachelor in Landscape Architecture you could study Masters in Landscape Architecture, but it will take three years instead of normal two-year masters. Landscape architects must make decisions and solve problems. Strong critical thinking skills will let you identify possible solutions and then evaluate them before choosing the best one.
Geoscientist
The perfect career for those who love to study our planet, its structure and how the oceans, atmosphere and living things interact. Geoscientists study the earth's many different facets, including its geological composition, processes and history. They use their knowledge of physics, chemistry and mathematics to study a variety of issues in the world - from predicting volcanic activity to ensuring clean water supply. Geoscientists require a bachelor's degree in geosciences, geology, physics, or related field. They may work in research, focusing on issues such as climate change or in government, and advise on policy.
Luxury Brand Management
The primary role of a luxury brand manager is to understand the heritage and history of the brand and to associate its values with a potential set of clients. It is a very young, dynamic, energetic and glamourous space to be in. The advantage is that you are not stuck to a particular industry segment. You specialise in managing a luxury brand and not a product. The career prospects range across the industry sectors. A strong business management background coupled with functional experience in management practices and marketing is essential to the success of a luxury brand manager.
Cosmetic Science
Cosmetic scientists are responsible for making safe and attractive make-up, perfume, hair products and toiletries. In order to be a cosmetic scientist, you normally need to study a science-related subject at university like chemistry, chemical engineering, biology or pharmacy. Although science-based, this job requires a lot of creativity, an eye for colour and a nose for smell. They are responsible for everything from coming up with an idea and creating prototypes to testing prototypes, scaling up batches for production and quality control testing when it's done. They also have to make sure that the product is safe to use, resistant to microbial contamination and capable of performing as claimed. Perhaps the future is about Roboticists or Interplanetary Surgeons - you never know!
