For an Associate member, The Netherlands have often punched above their weight. And England would attest to that.
The Dutch had England's scalp in the ICC World Twenty20 in 2009 as well as the 2014 edition in Bangladesh.
And The Netherlands captain Peter Borren said that the inaugural Desert T20 tournament will be the perfect stage to show why they are one of the most successful sides among Associates in the game's abridged format.
"We are looking to win our first game against Oman and then going on to the semifinals and finals will be good for Netherland cricket. It will be a good statement to make. Of all the teams here, we are one of the most successful T20 sides and hopefully we can show why at this tournament," said Borren.
"Obviously, for us, the boys in orange, The Netherlands it is a chance to get out there and show off our skills. We have an experienced T20 team and we have done well in the past in this format. We have had some success at World T20 tournaments," he added.
The 33-year-old, who represented his native New Zealand at the Under-19 World Cup in 2002, felt though that it would be a very competitive tournament, looking at the teams involved.
"One thing is for sure, all eight teams will be looking to win the trophy. It is pretty even amongst the teams, not just in the rankings but also when you look at it on paper. And the nature of T20 cricket is that anyone can beat anyone on the day. So, it is going to be very competitive and we will see teams as well as individuals really step up and there will be some exciting cricket," Borren said.
The Netherlands are in Pool B alongside Scotland, Oman and Hong Kong.
Meanwhile, Hong Kong captain Babar Hayat said that his young team was looking forward to the tournament.
"Obviously, we guys are really excited about this tournament. When we were told that we would be playing against such teams in a tournament, we were really excited. We are prepared for it and looking forward to it," said Hayat.
"We have a very good young side and the average age is 24. So, we have an energetic team and we are looking forward to the tournament. We can't take any team lightly and we have to take it game by game," he added.
