Over 200 prisoners have been pardoned in Sharjah and Ajman ahead of Eid Al Adha.
His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, on Monday ordered the release of 132 prisoners of different nationalities from the emirate's Punitive and Correctional Institutions.
Prisoners who have served half their jail terms and exhibited good behaviour during their time in prisons have been pardoned.
Sharjah Ruler's gesture aims to enable the prisoners to join their families to celebrate Eid Al Adha.
Brigadier Saif Al Zeri Al Shamsi, Commander-in-Chief of Sharjah Police, hailed Dr Shaikh Sultan for giving the prisoners a chance to turn a new leaf.
A top official at the Sharjah Central Jail said they nominate inmates for pardons based on the type of their crime, conduct and behaviour while in jail.
Meanwhile, His Highness Shaikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ajman, ordered the release of 72 prisoners.
Shaikh Humaid's gesture demonstrates his keenness to grant prisoners a chance to begin a new life and celebrate Eid festivities with their families.
Brigadier Shaikh Sultan bin Abdullah Al Nuaimi, Commander-in-Chief of Ajman Police, expressed appreciation to Shaikh Humaid for his kind gesture. He said the pardon reflects the Ajman Ruler's interest in giving prisoners the chance to reform and become productive members of society.
