A female police officer was sentenced to three months in jail on Wednesday for stealing money in dollars, equivalent to Dh2,000, from a traveler's wallet while she was on duty at the Dubai International Airport.
The 28-year-old Emirati sergeant earlier denied in the Court of First Instance charges of breach of trust and embezzling money while she was on duty as a public officer. The court found her guilty and ordered her to pay a Dh2,000 worth of fine.
The female officer was arrested at 2pm on August 8 at Terminal 3 of the airport.
"The defendant worked at the inspection point of travelers' luggage. She was arrested at the departure hall after we were tipped off that she stole some money while on duty," a police officer said.
He told the prosecutor that the information, which they verified to be true, came from a reliable source. The witness added that they checked the CCTV cameras which caught the defendant stealing money from a wallet left in the lost and found section.
"She stole the money as shown in the camera recordings at around 12.30pm on August 5," the officer, who gave a testimony as a witness, said during investigation.
When brought for questioning, the defendant admitted she stole a sum in dollars which she converted into Dh2,000 at a money exchange outlet at the airport.
The sum was seized and enclosed to the case file.
She admitted during the investigation to the charge. The conviction may be appealed.
