The Abu Dhabi customs has foiled a bid to smuggle more than 30,000 bottles of alcohol out of the country at Al Ghuwaifat check post on the UAE-Saudi Arabia border.
Customs inspectors flagged down a "suspicious-looking" truck with a UAE licence plate. The inspectors used scanning devices to identify the items in the boxes labelled as 'apples'.
After unloading the cargo, 2,559 cardboard containers with 12 bottles of alcohol in each box were identified, bringing the total number of alcohol bottles to 30,708.
In another case, the customs foiled a bid to smuggle 8,000 prescription drugs into the country at the same check post.
During a routine inspection of buses passing through the check post, an Arab passenger was found carrying the pills. During investigation, customs officials found that the pills are classified as stimulant drugs which are to be used only as directed by a physician.
Mohammed Khadem Al Hameli, acting Director-General of General Administration of Customs - Abu Dhabi, commended the "strong cooperation" between the UAE security agencies and the customs to ensure the safety of the country's residents.
