An employee at a clinic running medical fitness tests, who tried to steal a report stating a Pakistani man suffered tuberculosis, has been sentenced to three months in jail, to be followed by deportation.
The Court of First Instance found the 42-year-old Indian guilty of attempted theft and bribery and ordered him to pay Dh20 as a fine.
The employee worked as an office assistant at the clinic in Al Muhaisnah, where medical fitness tests are done for residence visa stamping and renewal. He is accused of abusing his job that gave him access to the office where documents and tests results and reports were kept, to steal the report in return for Dh20 bribe offered by another Indian man.
The latter, who is a 43-year-old driver, has also been sentenced to three months in jail and deportation on an aiding and abetting charge. The incident took place on April 26 and was reported to Al Qusais police. The clinic employee admitted during the public prosecution investigation that he was contacted by the second accused and asked to steal the test result belonging to a Pakistani man. The employee was told the visa applicant took the test on April 13. He was offered Dh20 for the favour.
He told the second accused to wait for him in the clinic corridor until he came back with the report. However, both of them were caught by a security guard.
The first accused had been working as an office assistant at the clinic for three years and his job was to move files within the clinic, depending on the appointments of customers, as instructed by a health inspector.
