An Emirati police corporal was given a suspended jail term of one year by the Court of First Instance on Monday on the charge of embezzling Dh43,170.
The 24-year-old officer was accused of stealing the amount from a box inside the Lost and Found Section, at the Criminal Control Department of the Dubai police, in the vehicle impounding area in Al Qusais.
He was charged in his capacity as a public officer, for embezzling funds while on duty, and ordered to pay a fine equalling the sum.
The suspension of the execution of the jail sentence will be effective for 3 years.
The incident was reported on April 28, last year.
The corporal admitted during the investigation that he was on duty around 9:30 am on the day he stole the money, in an envelope, from a box. He put the money in his car and resumed his work.
Around 1:45 pm the same day, the officer who brought the item boxes from Al Barsha police station told the officers there was a sum of money missing. A criminal complaint was filed.
On September 11 last year, the corporal was contacted by Al Barsha police station. There, he admitted he embezzled the money from the Lost and Found Section and that he spent Dh 15,000 on buying spare parts for his car and the remaining amount on his personal pleasure.
The officer, who brought the Lost and Found item boxes, said that the Dh43,170 had been handed to Al Barsha police station by an employee of a hotel in the area, on March 31.
