A housemaid, who stole Dh6,000 in cash and two mobile phones worth about Dh1,600 from another maid at her sponsor's house, admitted a theft charge in the Court of First Instance.
The incident took place on August 23 when the 29-year-old Ethiopian maid took advantage that her fellow domestic helper was not at home to steal her money.
The other maid, also Ethiopian, 28, said she found that her cash and mobile phones were missing when she returned from the consulate. "I came back to my sponsor's home to pick up my stuff when I could not find the money and phones in my purse in the closet," she said.
The maid added that she knew the accused had stolen her money because they shared the same room in the sponsor's house in Al Qusais. She then informed the employer. "He called the police and they found my phones with her. She admitted she needed the money and she sent it to her family in Ethiopia," the complainant said.
The Emirati sponsor said that the defendant had been working for two years in his home.
"On August 23, my wife told me on the phone about a problem in the house. When the police arrived, they found the stolen phones in the maid's purse in her room. She was taken into police custody," he said.
The sponsor's Indian driver said the accused had asked him about one month prior to the complaint to transfer Dh6,000 to her family back home through a money exchange outlet. She took the transaction receipt from him later. He gave a testimony at the police station as a witness.
The court will announce a verdict on November 27.
