A man managed to sell a Dh50,000 car to a Saudi customer for almost thrice its market price, the Dubai Court of First Instance heard on Tuesday.
The defendant, a Yemeni, convinced the victim that he was selling a Mercedes Benz GL500 2010 model, when in reality it was a 2001 model.
An Emirati clearance clerk said the car had been purchased from Japan and shipped to the UAE.
According to prosecution records, the 28-year-old defendant and a Pakistani manager, 42, forged the car's customs release, after which the latter obtained the ownership document from the Roads and Transport Authority.
The complainant, a 58-year-old Saudi, said the Yemeni posted an ad online about a 2010 model car with an asking price of Dh210,000.
"I contacted him and we agreed that I would buy the car for Dh195,000. I came to the UAE and signed the purchase agreement. I paid him after the car was checked at the licensing department."
"He told me that the car would be exempted from customs fees in Saudi Arabia. I discovered that was not true when I took the car to my country."
The victim took the car to the brand's dealer in Saudi Arabia and found that the mileage had been manipulated. "I told the dealer to check the car's chassis number and they found it was made in 2001 and not 2010."
He then found that the real price of such a car was just Dh50,000.
