A Lebanese man has suffered a 40 per cent loss of eye sight after a woman allegedly hit him with a glass following an altercation at a dinner held by a mutual friend.
The 29-year-old man was invited to a dinner at a friend's house. According to records, he made remarks about a Kenyan female guest's sexuality which the latter overheard and then both had a tiff.
The Kenyan woman has been charged with assaulting the man and unintentionally causing him to lose his eye sight by 40 per cent.
The 31-year-old woman is also accused of exchanging insults with the man. She pleaded not guilty to the charges in the Court of First Instance.
The man said that he was invited to a dinner at his Tanzanian friend's house in Oud Al Muttaina in Al Qusais.
"It was around 8.30pm and there were lots of guests. I drank beer. After midnight, I had a misunderstanding with thewoman. She suddenly hit me with a glass of alcohol on my left eye."
The man added that his eye bled and he was taken to hospital.
Apart from verbally abusing the female attacker, the man is also being charged with drinking alcohol without a licence. He only admitted to the alcohol charge.
The 27-year-old Tanzanian woman, in whose house the incident allegedly took place, said that there were about ten couples at the dinner.
"Everybody was having a drink and suddenly a verbal brawl ensued between the two accused.
The woman told her friend that the man said something about her relation with another woman. "So she yelled and insulted him. He was trying to calm her down."
She threw the drink on his face, the witness testified, and then hit him with the glass on his eye, injuring him and causing him to bleed.
The forensic report showed that the man suffered a permanent eye injury, which is the loss of sight in his left eye.
The woman admitted during the investigation to having exchanged insults with the other guest and claimed she did not mean to physically assault him.
