The Dubai Police provided Dh5.7million in aid to prisoners (male and female) and their families in 2017, as compared to Dh3.3 million in 2016.
A sum of Dh2.4 million was given to 2,997 inmates, while Dh3.3 million in aid went to 2,555 prisoners, in cooperation from charity institutions, said a top police official. The total number of inmates who benefited from the aid was 5,552. This financial assistance contributed to improving the inmates' living conditions in prisons, as well as assisting their families and ending their financial crises in various ways, the official added.
The Dubai Police partners with charity institutions and individuals who help in the release of the inmates, especially those who continue to languish in jail because they do not have the ability to pay off their debts.
Lt Habib Hussain Al Zaloumi, head of the humanitarian care department, said that the aid also went towards paying prisoners' debts, amounting to Dh2.7 million.
