A Dubai Municipality campaign has found "several" irregularities in health practices followed by school canteens and technical condition of food served there.
The municipality inspected canteens in 315 schools as it began its inspection campaign for the new academic year.
Sultan Ali Al Tahir, head of the municipality's food inspection section, said all necessary corrective actions were put in place to ensure the application of best practices. This will ensure the safety of the foodstuff at various educational institutions in Dubai.
The campaign will continue at the beginning of the second term in January and during the third term in the month of April. It involves a number of food and health inspectors and officers.
The inspections ensure that there are no hazardous irregularities such as lack of heat preservation when put up for sale at canteens and also during its transportation to schools.
The inspectors also make sure the canteens maintain general hygiene; that there are no traces of insects and rodents; the vehicles that transport food from the source to the schools are approved by the Food Safety Department of Dubai Municipality; and the schools provide sufficient space for food supply. The canteens should get a score of not less than very good (B) during the last inspection visit, and the cleaning of water tanks should be done by companies certified by the municipality.
