An overloaded lift of a 22-floor building in Ras Al Khaimah crashed on Sunday, leaving 11 women and a child injured.
The injured - Arab and Comoros Island nationalities - who received minor injuries received first-aid at the site, and were then shifted to the Saqr Hospital.
A source with the Ras Al Khaimah Civil Defence said: "Despite its maximum 800kg capacity, 12 people, including three children, took the lift at one time that the dragging cable was cut at the 6th floor."
The tenants of the building, located at the Nakheel area, alerted the Central Operations Room, which dispatched rescue teams and paramedics to the site in a record time. "Luckily, the side brakes fitted with the lift, and other safety devices have reduced the falling speed of the lift, which landed on a shock absorber," he added.
The incident has been referred to the bodies concerned to examine the lift, the same source said.
