DUBAI — Mystery shrouds the disappearance of a 24-year-old Indian woman a day after she arrived in the UAE with her husband on September 2, 2005.
Smitha, a computer graduate from Kerala, went missing on September 3 from her husband, Sabu alias Antony's apartment in Karama. Smitha's parents, voicing their concern over their daughter, believe that Sabu has something to do with her disappearance. The husband is lodged in jail facing trial in an illicit relationship case, and the case is posted for hearing on Nov. 29.
A police source said the search for the missing girl continues, while her husband is lodged in jail booked under an illicit relationship case.
Speaking over telephone from India, Fancy, Smitha's mother, told City Times that she is still waiting for information about her daughter who has been missing in Dubai since September 3, and believes that her husband, Sabu Alias Antony, is behind her mysterious disappearance.
"I don't know what happened to my daughter. But I am sure about one thing, Sabu and Mini, the woman who shares his apartment, are aware of my daughter's whereabouts. I have not slept well in all these days. I just want my daughter back," she said.
She said they had some doubts about Sabu's behaviour when he insisted on taking Smitha to Dubai from Delhi. "Sabu's mother came over to our house and took the girl to New Delhi on August 28. When we asked why they were travelling from New Delhi and not any airport in Kerala, they said tickets were not available."
Fancy disclosed that Smitha had called her up on September 3 and told her that she would call later. "I have not heard her voice since that day."
Meanwhile, Sabu, denying the allegations over phone from jail, said : "I don't know what happened to her. I am also worried about her and I believe the truth will come out one day."
The episode began when Sabu, an employee of Dubai Labour Supply Company (DULSCO), claimed his wife was missing from the apartment they were staying in Karama.
He lodged a complaint with Al Rafa Police station. He produced a letter allegedly written by Smitha in which she states she was leaving his home to stay with her boy friend in Abu Dubai.
But according to Smitha's parents, the letter has been forged. "The letter has not been written by Smitha. The style of writing and the script are different from her handwriting," said the parents.
After two days, Sabu lodged another complaint with the Dubai Police alleging that Macson, a cousin of Smitha, tried to attack him and had threatened to kill him. But, according to Smitha's parents, Macson went to Sabu to enquire about Smitha which led to an argument ending up in a fight.
Later, Dubai Police arrested Macson, Sabu and Mini, allegedly an housemaid, who was sharing the apartment with Sabu. Police charged Sabu and Mini of having an illicit relationship and they are in Dubai prosecution jail.
