Shaikh Mohammed sends PERSONAL jet to Haiti with aid

Port-au-Prince - His wife Princess Haya arrived in the hurricane-stricken country to deliver 90 metric tons of relief among the affected.

As per the direction of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Dubai Ruler, his wife wife Princess Haya bint Al Hussein met an airlift from Dubai's International Humanitarian City (IHC) at Rome Fiumicino Airport (they were refueling in Rome), to travel to Port-au-Prince, Haiti to oversee a delivery of 90 metric tonnes of relief supplies to those affected by Hurricane Matthew.
The princess was in Rome to meet Pope Francis and attend a Soccer Match for Peace, starring football legends such as Maradona and Ronaldinho.
Following the match, Princess Haya immediately flew to Haiti on an IHC airlift to personally deliver and oversee the distribution of relief supplies, after Hurricane Matthew abruptly demolished the island last week. At least 1.4 million people require immediate attention, with almost 300,000 people residing in temporary shelters as many small towns and villages have been wiped off the map.
She previously visited Port-au-Prince on a similar mission after the equally devastating earthquake hit in 2010.
The aid shipment was organized by the International Humanitarian City per the instruction of HH Shaikh Mohammed, and included supplies from the United Nations Humanitarian Response Depot and its partners including Save the Children, Handicap International, World Vision International, Catholic Relief Services, USAID and Lutheran World Relief.
The aid, which was transported on Shaikh Mohammed's personal 747B-400, is valued at more than $350,000 and is estimated to impact approximately 340,000 people. It includes water purification units, mosquito nets, medical supplies, tents and other support equipment that will be distributed among those in need.

He gave instructions for his cargo plane, a Boeing 747, to return to Dubai to load relief goods from the IHC.

I am so proud, when I see the UAE flag draped across the cargo shipments sent by our own NGOs. The people of Haiti have suffered unimaginable trials after being hit by the massive earthquake in 2010; they suffered from an outbreak of cholera that is said to have killed up to 10,000 people. And now as they have been reeling from that and trying to rebuild, hurricane Matthew, once again, ripped away all the hopes they had tried so hard to build.

When we took off from Rome, the plane felt really heavy. I asked the pilots about it and they told me that normally they operate this aircraft at much lighter weights, and there is a difference between bulk and weight. He had to use maximum thrust to take off. We are carrying relief for so many NGOs and agencies, it's the weight of all that goodness!

As we began to descend for landing in Haiti, we were hit by a huge storm. And as they opened the doors of the plane it was lashing rain. But I had the most wonderful welcome ever, the Jordanian Peace Keepers. I was so proud to see them, and they took such good care of me and our party throughout our stay. These brave men sent special greetings to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed, and to the people of the UAE. They asked me to say that they were very proud to see an Arab country send such a huge airlift to Haiti, where they are serving.

The focus of the aid shipment (as cholera is a growing concern) is facilitating access to a sufficient supply of quality water, education, shelter, child protection, health and nutrition for those affected.

They opened the massive side compartment of the Cargo plane and began the long job of offloading our relief. There was a very organized and constant flow of trucks that removed the palates as they came off and checked them through from manifests with the many NGO and Agency representatives that were there. Finally they were all moved to be stored at the WFP warehouses for the night.

The massive 747B-400 just dwarfed everything around her in the airport. I still cannot believe how amazing she felt when we came into land she absolutely felt so sleek and fast, but when the pilot put the flaps up she turned with such agility on the approach. It was so impressive, even with the massive tonnage she carried for the UAE

They say that in the 4 districts worst hit, 2 things happened at the same time. A wave came from the sea front about 15 feet high, at the same time as massive floods caused by the relentless rain. The flash floods from the rain descended the mountain terrain and met the wall of water coming from the sea. Anything caught in between that was alive, people, animals, trees was killed.

The UAE has always played an important role in providing aid and assistance during disasters and crises. Last month, per the direction of HH Shaikh Mohammed, over 100 tonnes of aid were delivered to Entebbe, Uganda for 60,000 South Sudanese refugees that had fled the ongoing conflict in South Sudan.
