Labour Day celebrates workers' role in country

Sharjah - The Sharjah Labour Standards Development Authority has also carried out an inspection survey to improve the living condition of labourers in Al Sajjah area

Labour protests have disappeared in the country because of pro-worker legislations and procedures that preserve their rights, a top police official has said.
Brigadier Ali Al Nadas, director of community police at the Sharjah Police, said his team has helped raise awareness among workers to follow proper channels to report and lodge complaints about the issues they faced.
He was speaking to Khaleej Times as more than 20,000 workers gathered in Sharjah on Sunday to mark the International Labour Day.
At the celebration, the Sharjah Labour Standards Development Authority (SLSDA) announced that it has carried out an inspection survey to improve the living condition of labourers in Al Sajjah area.
Addressing the gathering, Salem Al Qassir, chairman of the SLSDA, announced that the data analysis phase is also ready to be submitted to the Sharjah Executive Council. This will result in necessary measures and introduction of policies to ensure high standards in the labour accommodations. The survey will soon be started in industrial areas No 14 and No 15.
Sharjah Labour Days kicked off on Saturday with a medical camp by Aster Group and a mobile dental clinic by University City, Sharjah, whose doctors provided medical checkups, treatment and dental services to a large number of workers.
Sharjah government entities including the Sharjah Police, the General Directorate of Civil Defence, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation and the Sharjah Health Department organised an awareness programme on Sunday. It educated labourers about their rights, rules and regulations and stressed on the need to stay clear of crimes.
The Sunday sports day was inaugurated by Omer Salem Al Sharji, director of institutional support and communication department, which was followed by entertainment programmes. The event's closing ceremony was attended by the heads of various government departments in Sharjah, and diplomats from many missions.
Speaking to Khaleej Times, Al Qassir said that through the event, the Sharjah government acknowledged and appreciated the work of all those who struggle hard to build the country and contribute towards its development and economic progress under the wise leadership's vision.
He said the authority is making great efforts to improve the living conditions of workers in the emirate. "In coordination with the Ministry of Labour and Emiratisation, the authority is keen to play an important role in protecting workers' rights and ensuring the interests of employers," he said.
