Seven Indian residents received moderate to serious injuries following a two-car collision on the road leading to Jabal Jais, the UAE's highest mountain.
The mishap took place on Friday evening, according to police sources and informed sources.
The central operations room of the RAK Police, having been alerted of the accident, immediately dispatched traffic patrols, ambulances, and paramedics to the site in a record time.
"Seven Indian expatriates have suffered injuries; some of them sustained moderate wounds and those were shifted to the Saqr Public Hospital, while some others were rushed to the Shaikh Khalifa Specialty Hospital in Ras Al Khaimah."
One of the seven passengers received gruesome injuries and fractures, and was airlifted to an advanced hospital in Abu Dhabi for treatment and medical care, they said.
"Initial investigation and enactment of the accident showed that the accident was blamed on inattentive driving and speeding," they said, adding that the incident has been referred to the traffic prosecution for due legal action.
The department of public works and services, in view of the repetitive accidents, announced that the third phase of the development of the 36km-long Jebel Jais road will be completed by the end of April next year 2017.
The six-lane road consists of three lanes in each direction, he added. "Public phones, multiple parking spaces will be provided along the entire major road to ensure people safety and convenience."
Recent accidents
Late in November this year, a young girl, Arab, suffered a fracture in one of her legs after she fell down a sloppy area on the Jebel Jais.
Earlier in February this year, a 33-year-old Asian man was killed and seven others received several injuries in a road accident also on the Jebel Jais. The victim, identified only as M.K.K., was driving down the mountainous road in RAK when he lost control over the steering wheel, veered off the road, and collided with another car on the other direction heading up to the peak.
Few days earlier to that mishap, an eight-year-old Asian boy was killed in a traffic accident on the road leading to the Jais. The mishap was blamed on the 41-year-old father, who lost control over the steering wheel, veered off the mountainous road, and turned turtle, according to Col Sulaiman Mohammed Al Kizi, Chief of Al Rams Police Station.
