Police prevent gas-leak disaster at Sharjah warehouse

Sharjah - The municipality official said that there was no serious pollution in the air

Concerned authorities in Sharjah recently managed to avert a gas-leak disaster in Sharjah Industrial Area No. 4 due to their timely and responsible intervention. A loud explosion that was reported from the warehouse of a company, that deals in importing and exporting of chlorine gas created pandemonium and panic in the area.

The police said that they received a call from the management of the company and dispatched a team of patrols, forensic and CID officers, that handled the incident professionally and in coordination with the civil defence and Sharjah Municipality.
The investigation revealed that one among the large quantity of gas cylinders was opened and caused the leakage as well as the explosion. Improper way of storing and overstocking the cylinders was blamed for the leakage and explosion.

The police forced the company to bring huge basins filled with water and asked them to empty all the cylinders of the gas in the water. This process was conducted under the supervision of municipality's department of environment and civil defense.
The municipality official said that there was no serious pollution in the air, as the team managed to control the situation well in time. The collaboration efforts of the three concerned department have contributed a great deal in solving the issue in a short time.

Sami Al Naqabi, Director-General of the Sharjah Civil Defense, said that firefighters arrived in five minutes to the site and were on stand-by in case of any fire or blast that could be caused by the gas leak. "Our role was to ensure security and safety and prevent eruption of fire in the site," he added.
