Power outages to be prevented during summer: Sewa

The Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa) has recently initiated measures to face challenges and to meet growing demand for water and power supplies with the approaching summers.
Dr Rashid Al Leem, chairman of Sewa, said that consumption of power is expected to increase from eight per cent to 10 per cent and the quantity of power will meet such demands.
He added that to prevent power outage in residential, commercial and industrial areas during summer, (Sewa) has conducted maintenance work for 1,800 power production plants, including 33 kilowatt power plants at a cost of Dh5 million. He said that Sewa also conducted maintenance work in 2, 825 distribution plants to ensure stability in the power networks during the summer times which usually see high consumption of electricity due to the use of air conditioning.
The maintenance services include replacing of line connection and power transformers, cables in all Sharjah's old residential areas. The Sewa also installed large number of light poles on many roads and residential area and it contributed to minimising of traffic accidents and ensuring security.
It also established two power production plants with capacity of 132 kilowatt for each in Wasit and Altilal areas to supply power to their residents and in their neighbourhood. There are also two new production plants in Khorfakkan and Kalba with capacity of 33KW to be operational soon. He said that, Sewa's team of engineers and technicians are now well prepared to face summer challenges and provide best services for the residents in Sharjah.
Dr Al Leem pointed out that in order to prevent water disconnection, Sewa has recently installed devices to detect water leakage and also upgraded water networks and increased its number to 54 networks to function continuously.
Sewa has completed several projected related to upgrading and extending water pipelines to meet the demand of water consumption in the emirate.
It started installing networks plants in Al Sajjah area with length of 10km to supply water to factories, warehouses and labour accommodation.
