The Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (SEWA) have fixed multiple gas leaks at a natural gas plant behind the Hilton hotel in Al Majaz.
The gas leaks, which were due to technical fault were fixed within a short time without any disruption of services.
Residents living near the area have brought this to the attention of SEWA and a maintenance team was sent. The team, which was led by Dr. Rashid Al Leem, Chairman of SEWA ,rushed to the site and identified the affected area and made relevant repairs.
Speaking to Khaleej Times, Dr. Al Leem said that the gas network in Sharjah is very advanced and in line with international safety standards. It also has features that allows it to detect any leaks. Upon detection, an alert will be sent to the emergency center where a team will dispatch a group of technicians to fix any damages.
He also stressed that the natural gas project serves to protect the environment. Natural gas is both cheap and safe. It also does not run out while cooking and is a viable alternative to LPG.
Al Majaz residents said that they did not experience any disruption in the services, but the smell of the gas was prevalent in the area. "Many people panicked from the unpleasant and pungent odour of the gas," said Ahmed Salim, a resident living in the area.
