The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) will offer a bike rental service along the Dubai Tramway line soon.
The RTA will undertake the scheme in two phases - the first covers stations of Dubai Media City, Palm Jumeirah, Knowledge Village and Al Sufouh; and the second covers JLT, Dubai Marina stations and the extension of Al Sufouh Street separating the Marina and JBR.
The initiative is intended to encourage people to add bicycles to their mobility options.
"Offering this service complements our efforts in linking the existing cycling lanes along Jumeirah Street with the Marina, as well as the extension of the JBR Walk," said Hussain Al Banna, Director of Traffic at RTA's Traffic and Roads Agency. All traffic safety requirements and technical procedures of using bikes have been taken into account in the planning process, said Al Banna.
"The service rests on the provision ... of dedicated cycling tracks fitted with directional signage at world-class standards in order to enhance traffic safety procedures and support RTA's efforts to ensure safety of road users in the emirate."
The move is in line with a resolution issued by Shaikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council, governing the use of bikes in Dubai.
