A Saudi man was arrested in Dubai, with more than 62kg of amphetamine pills in possession, the Dubai Court of First Instance heard on Thursday.
As many as 367,577 pills were seized from the 29-year-old accused, who has been placed in detention ever since. However, the man pleaded not guilty to the charge of possession and dealing in drugs when he was brought before the judges. The arrest was made on January 11 in Al Qusais.
"I was assigned to be part of the task force that would apprehend the suspect who was a member of a gang active in dealing in drugs," an anti-narcotics police major said.
"By the time we obtained a search and arrest warrant we learnt the suspect was in Al Qusais. We went there and spotted his car parked outside a restaurant. We called for the nearest patrol car and as he saw the police he crashed into a car ahead of him when trying to speed away in the busy street. Then he stepped off and ran, trying to make his way between the cars but we could catch him," the officer added.
"We searched his vehicle and found 3 large bags. He claimed they contained mobile phones which he got from a man, unknown to him, in Al Aweer. However, we found large plastic bags inside which contained pills," the major told the prosecutor.
The accused was then taken to the General Directorate of Criminal Evidence for urine test, which proved negative. The accused later led the anti-narcotics officers to his place in Sharjah. But no banned substance was found there.
The Crime Lab report showed the bags contained 62.82kg of amphetamine pills. He will be sentenced on April 10.
