An Ethiopian housemaid, who allegedly stole, together with other accomplices at large, Dh1.4 million in cash and Dh700,000 worth of jewelry from her female employer's home, was charged in court on Thursday.

The 26-year-old maid pleaded not guilty to a theft charge in the Court of First Instance. "It was not me but two men who committed the theft. I told the police the same but they wanted me to confess by force," she claimed before the judge bench.
The case dates back to October 29, last year, at a time when the complainant, an Iranian, was in South Africa.

"The maid sent me a WhatsApp message telling me that the safe in my bedroom was missing. I immediately asked my brother to go to my flat in Mirdif. He called the police and the maid was not there. After he managed to open the door he found the safe was stolen indeed. He filed a criminal complaint," the 31-year-old complainant said.

The accused gave a similar statement during interrogation. "I let a man and a woman inside the flat as I went there for cleaning work. Shortly later, I saw the man running from the bedroom carrying a safe. I asked him what was going on and he said 'nothing'," she told the police.
The complainant said that the jewelry consisted of diamond and expensive watches and was worth Dh700,000 while there was also Dh 1.4 m in cash in the safe.

The court will sentence the maid on March 13.
