A cook, accused of stabbing his roommate to death and trying to kill another after he reportedly heard them saying that they sexually assaulted him while he was sleeping, was sentenced to life in jail on Wednesday.
According to public prosecution records, the 27-year-old Egyptian became furious and chased his roommates with a knife. He stabbed a Jordanian multiple times, killing him, and stabbed a compatriot who managed to escape and seek neighbours' help.
He earlier denied charges of premeditated murder and attempted murder in court.
The Dubai Court of First Instance ordered he be deported afterwards.
Another Egyptian cook, 39, had been initially charged with criminal complicity but charges were later dropped against him. No involvement on his part was proven in the incident that happened on September 16, 2015.
Al Barsha police responded to a call from an Indian resident around 5am. "I was shocked by a man with a bleeding neck (the first victim) entering my place and collapsing in front of my eyes," the resident said.
The police moved to the scene and arrested the accused. He told them he stabbed the two men with a knife which he threw later in the garbage.
The Egyptian victim said the deceased came back around 4:15 am. "I heard him screaming at the defendant shortly later and as I tried to stand up to see what was going on I was stabbed several times. I could crawl outside and go to the next door flat."
A neighbour said he was with his friends when an Arab man (the second victim) entered his flat. "He was holding his abdomen that had a stab wound. A man followed him and punched and kicked him."
The witness gave the injured clothes to cover his hand which was bleeding too.
The defendant claimed during interrogation that around 4:30 am he heard his three flatmates talking about how they abused him. He stabbed both men.
The third flatmate, whose involvement in the incident was ruled out, was then in the toilet. As he went out to the corridor, the defendant chased him. "He slapped me several times saying that I was with them," the flatmate told the prosecutor.
The forensic expert said the death was caused by the two deep stab wounds the victim received in the neck and abdomen and the severe internal bleeding.
The defendant may still appeal the ruling.
