An engineer, accused of sexually harassing a cleaner at office, has been found not guilty by a Dubai court. The 39-year-old Syrian was on trial for allegedly slapping the Filipina woman's rear with his left hand on March 27.
The Court of First Instance cleared him of a sexual harassment charge. He had pleaded not guilty.
The complainant, 32, said she was filling water from a cooler for a customer at the private firm she worked for around 3:00pm. "I was in the corridor. The accused passed by me and slapped me in an inappropriate way. His slap was so hard that it made a loud sound."
The woman then cried and yelled, asking him to justify his behaviour. "He said it was nothing. I went to the kitchen while my colleague talked to him and called the police."
A 34-year-old Filipina woman, a civil engineer who witnessed the incident, said the defendant told her he thought it was his longtime friend who was in the narrow corridor. "He said he did not excuse himself because he thought it was his friend."
The court ruling may be appealed by the public prosecution.
