Two Nigerians allegedly robbed Dh563,000 from a tailor after stalking a man and spotting him dropping the money bag at this shop, a court has heard.
The two men, both unemployed, aged 31 and 28, had a tip from a Bangladeshi man that someone would be driving his car in possession of more than Dh500,000 in Iyaal Nasser, Al Muraqqabat. They waited for him in the same area with other runaway accomplices. Their plan was to attack that driver and steal the cash from him by any means.
However, they had to change their plan after seeing an em6ployee (tailor) at the shop walking out and taking the money from that driver. They entered the shop and took the money off a counter after threatening and attacking the employee with two pairs of scissors.
The employee, a Bangladeshi, 36, said that around 4:25pm on November 24, 2016, he was at work in the shop when his friend, who works at an electronics outlet, called him. "He told me to come to him where he was waiting across the road to pick up a bag containing a large sum of money and keep it for him until he could find a parking. He said he would come back shortly later to take it as he wanted to purchase mobile phones from Naif Souq."
The tailor added: "I did take the money from him. However, as I put the bag on the counter, I felt a blow on my neck from behind. I turned around and saw an African man holding a pair of scissors. Another African man took another pair of scissors from a table and held it at my face, trying to snatch the money bag. I was pushed, attacked and hurt with the scissors when I tried to stop them."
While one of the attackers managed to flee the scene with the money, the victim and three other men could restrain the other accused and pull the scissors from him. The victim was left with scratches in his face, left leg and hands.
A police officer said they interrogated the first accused. "We checked the surveillance camera footage of a general trading shop located nearby. It showed the other thief running away with the money. The man who was already in custody admitted there were five accomplices. He led us to their flat in Al Nahda, Sharjah.
