As many as 18 families were evacuated and provided temporary accommodation in hotels after a massive fire broke out in a 43-storeyed residential tower in Al Majaz 2 on Tuesday night.
The firefighters of Sharjah Civil Defence managed to put out the blaze in an hour and no causalities were reported.
The building also has eight parking lots, which are occupied by a large number of families from various nationalities.
The joint operations room (of police and civil defence) received a call at 9.41pm about the fire and dispatched firefighters from five fire stations, ambulances, Anjad  and Snad patrols, which reached the site in three minutes.
The teams controlled the fire - which broke out on the fifth floor and extended to the rest - after an hour-long exercise. A number of apartments in the lower floors were also affected by the massive smoke and billowing flames.
The firefighting operation was supervised by Brig Ahmed Al Naoor, director of operations room, and Brig Mohammed Al Obad, deputy director of the operations room.
The police patrol cordoned off the site and diverted the traffic to facilitate the work of the firefighters, while the community police provided shelter in hotels to 18 families, whose apartments were affected by the fire.
