5,000 workers get Dubai moving again after heavy rain

About 5,000 Dubai Municipality workers cleaned up 265 affected locations, as the team responded to 22 complaints of water logging, it was announced on Tuesday.

He noted that the team of 5,000 workers from different municipality departments arranged 48 tanks for the areas not served by the network, 35 tanks in Dubai city alone and the rest in the countryside.
He added that the team was prepared for emergency situations based on the meteorological reports and rain forecast on the emirate.

"An emergency plan was prepared quickly and suction pumps were distributed in Jumeirah, Al Quoz Industrial area, Muhaisnah and Al Aweer so as to remove the water from the streets in areas where there are drainages. Also some 95 suction pumps were distributed to drain the water faster," said Julfar.

The plan included comprehensive cleaning of 72,000 drainages, the 195,000 meter long main pipelines for rain water, besides an intensive maintenance programme for the 59 storm water drainage stations that are distributed geographically throughout the city.

"As an inevitable result of the above, the general storm water network had a good capacity to absorb water easily," he said, noting that the team cleared storm water pools and removed sand, besides covering the reports on traffic accidents during the period of rainfall.
He explained that the team had divided Dubai into 10 areas and the working hour was converted to a state of emergency and the team worked around the clock until the full withdrawal of water from the streets and cleaning them from waste at the same time.
