Members of the Green Globe NGO attended the Federal Electricity & Water Authority (FEWA) awareness campaign on Thursday, August 25. The session was all about electricity and water conservation in the city, in keeping with Green Globe's own objectives of a healthier and greener environment.
Green Globe is a group of around 300 students from Grade 4 to 12, working for environment and sustainability awareness campaigns in the country. The group of young volunteers aims to raise awareness via action and give back to society through their campaigns. Tree plantation is one such initiative of theirs.
Recently, the group organised an interactive session for nursery children on environmental issues, followed by a 'plantation activity' in Sharjah. Around 15 volunteers from the group visited Kids Paradise Nursery and Happy Home Nursery in Sharjah on August 23 and 24 to plant over 15 fruits and 20 saplings in both nurseries. They briefed the little kids about the importance of nurturing and protecting plants and conserving limited resources.
Humaid Habeeb, founder of Green Globe and the regional ambassador of Tunza Eco Generation (an initiative of UNEP) thinks everyone should take the responsibility to make this planet a better place. He said: "We must use the resources in hand to keep our world in a better state, working for a sustainable future because every action makes a difference".
Hamza Aamir, a Green Globe member, thinks planting a tree and realising it will benefit many people is quite an amazing feeling. "I am happy to be a part of this," Aamir said.
The group has organised more than 50 events, including tree plantations, clean ups, anti-smoking awareness campaigns at labour camps, food distribution drives, volunteering at numerous events and relief contribution for needy people. They have worked closely with many entities including Dubai Municipality, DEWA, Sharjah Environment and Protected Areas Authority and Ramada resorts. The organisation is also a part of the Earth Charter Youth Groups.
