6 November 2009 Dubai’s Fash Family
Who better to write a fashion blog than the daughter of the most fashionable family in Dubai. Tala Samman has taken her love of fashion online with her blog www.myfashdiary.com, where she muses on her favourite collections, which she “adores” and “obsesses over”. It is a refreshingly honest read and the pictures with Mr Louboutin make us all a little green with envy.
A Pink Affair
In what was the most buzzed about show of Dubai Fashion Week, the Barbie presentation saw Dubai’s most fashionable people packed into the ballroom at the InterContinental Hotel to take in life-sized creations by local designers such as Ayesha Depala, Hatem Al-Akeel and HSY in celebration of the beloved doll’s 50th anniversary.
Steal Her Look — Literally
Celeb watching is a favourite pastime for many, but to admire a celeb’s look and to literally steal her style are very different things. The recent break-ins suffered by Rachel Bilson, Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton have, reportedly, been the work of teenage girls obsessed with clothing, who studied the tabloids to stake out their targets. Since when did celeb dressing become part of LA’s school curriculum?
Elegance Personified
Local boutique Miss Elegant, best known for its luxury designer abayas, has partnered with designer Amber Feroz to create a collection for Spring/Summer 2010. Showcasing experimental yet wearable abayas, the line showed fine black silks draped, layered, twisted, knotted and wrapped, creating ultra-feminine silhouettes.
Great Fashion Moments
Dior’s New Look 60th Anniversary
The brilliance of the art of couture can only be appreciated upon close inspection. While nearly all creations are totally unwearable without alterations, the world of couture is a fantasy land for those whose imagination is endless when it comes to the creation of beauty in cloth. For the 60th anniversary of the house of Dior, Creative Director John Galliano was tasked with giving the legendary couture house a proper acknowledgement. He gathered together the most beautiful faces in the industry for the epic show in July 2007. Staged at night in the Orangerie in Paris’ Palace of Versailles, Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Amber Valetta, Shalom Harlow and Gisele Bundchen took to the runway in full make-up and lavish crinolines, as well as new takes on the iconic 1947 suit. As with every move by Galliano, the show pays homage to Mr Dior’s love of art, and he drew inspiration from fashion painters such as Caravaggio, El Greco and Vermeer. He also included references from fashion illustrators, photographers Irving Penn and Christian Dior himself, who changed the way women dressed post World War II.
