My Kind of Weekend

23 October 2009

I love this time of year in Dubai as it gives me the opportunity to do my favourite thing in the world — lying on the beach.

I can’t wait for the oppressive  heat of summer to finally break so I can dust off my bikini and head to the beach, safe from the fear of sunburn and being turned an awful shade of red for days on end. I like to start my weekend with a trip to Jumeirah Beach Park 0n Friday. I get there nice and early in the morning to beat the crowds and get a good spot, and I always come prepared. I take my blanket, towel, umbrella, sun cream and, of course, a good book. Sometimes, when I have to cool down, I take a dip in the water, but I won’t get too deep as I’m not a very strong swimmer. After a few hours soaking up the rays, I wander over to The Lime Tree Café for a bite. It’s hungry work laying around doing nothing all morning. Come Friday night, I’m fully recharged and ready for a night out in town. My friends and I usually head to Barasti Bar at Dubai Marina for a drink before going for a nice meal somewhere. Saturday is spent, you guessed it, at the beach, usually JBR. It’s so relaxing, and free, which is unusual in Dubai. After a few hours, it’s back home for chores and washing before heading to bed for the start of another week relaxed, and tanned.

The Knowledge

I hate wearing glasses. They’re so geeky, but my parents say contact lenses are bad for kids under 12. I’ve read online that this is just a myth. Do you know if it’s true?

Leanne Benny John, Sharjah

Look alive, Leanne, we’ve got news for you. Irene Sophia, senior optometrist at The City Hospital, Dubai, says that’s not necessarily true. “If it’s just a general matter of visual correction, anyone who can handle lenses can use them, irrespective of age.” She also says, “This idea came about mostly because children below 12 are not considered mature enough to maintain the proper hygiene that’s important when using contact lenses. But we’ve had cases where we’ve prescribed contacts for those patients we feel are capable of taking the necessary care.” So, Leanne, if you think you can be mature about lenses, speak to your folks — they just might see things your way.

Do you have a question that simply needs to be answered? If no one else can help, never fear, The Knowledge is here to answer all those unanswerable questions. wknd@khaleejtimes.com
