The book, which was unveiled during the Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences recently, also gives details about the 800 genetic disorders in the Arab world, including 228 in the UAE.
The new Volume II of “Genetic Disorders in the Arab World” also focuses on the genetic disorders in Bahrain. Says Dr Ghazi Omar Tadmouri, Assistant Director of CAGS: “This section is the first attempt of the centre to give detailed information of genetic disorders prevalent in an Arab country other than the UAE.” The book describes the status of genetic disorders in 24 Arab countries and also includes special extensive reviews on the occurrence of genetic disorders in the Arab population, both nationals and expatriate Arabs, of the UAE.
“In this book, we have briefly listed all the details in the CTGA database, which is also available on the Internet,” said Tadmouri. He added that the new volume contained details of 15 more genetic disorders in the UAE, which were not available in the first volume of the book. “Another important chapter, written by CAGS Director Dr Mahmoud Taleb Al Ali, gives a first of its kind description about metabolic disorders here, especially those in Dubai.” he said.
“Similar to the overall situation in the Arab world, congenital malformations and chromosomal abnormalities form the overwhelming majority of the genetic disorders in the UAE,” he has explained in the book.
All the 2,000 copies of the first volume of the book have been circulated and around 7,000 copies were freely distributed through the net.
