Sharjah: His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, has issued a decision to change the name of Al Sajjah Water Desalination plant to Al Rahmaniya Water Desalination plant.

Al Rahmaniya Water Desalination plant produced 5 million gallons of water per day from 50 wells and supplied water to Al Jeramiah area, Sharjah Airport International Free Zone, and the American University Sharjah.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, Dr Rashid Alleem, Director-General of Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa) said that Sewa is making great efforts in enhancing water supply services to the residents of the emirate. All water desalination plants in the emirate produced 110 million gallons per day based on international standards and fit for consumption, like drinking, cooking, washing and bathing.

He clarified that Sewa uses two resources for supplying pure water. The first source is the sea water desalination which is conducted in Alliah plant that produces 55 million gallons per day and Al Hamriya plant which produced 20 million gallons per day. The second source is ground water from 310 wells that produced 15 million gallons of water per day (treated and desalinated).

Dr Alleem said that the number of water networks in Sharjah has gone up to more than 3,000 kilometre.” Sewa is currently making efforts to empower and enhance the distribution networks to meet the increasing demands of the present and the future in all residential, commercial and industrial areas.

“He added, Sewa has also started using smart devices to operate new water desalination plant located in Tahil Area to save payments for human operators.

Dr Alleem is keen to use all advanced technology to facilitate the services, save efforts and money.
