As an Indian businessman living abroad, it gives me great joy to note the scales of economic success and global reach my country has, and continues to achieve. In the spectrum of healthcare, India is fast creating a significant footprint on the global map as a leading healthcare destination with its rich heritage of healing and medicine, combined with astounding advancement in technology, human care, intellect and infrastructure. At Aster DM Healthcare, we stepped into this massive ocean of healthcare in India with the management of the Malabar Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS), a highly advanced and comprehensive medical facility set up in 2001 in Calicut, Kerala.

We strengthened our operations in the country with a state-of-the-art quaternary care centre, Aster Medcity in Kerala in 2015, which was inaugurated by Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. Aster Medcity is poised to carry the mantle as the leading healthcare destination in Southeast Asia. The facility meets this ambition by delivering an entire gamut of healthcare offerings met by a massive pool of highly skilled expertise, cutting-edge technology and the most advanced healing environment. Aster Medcity is built across 40 acres of land and over 1km waterfront, and planned over three phases, the first of which has seen the delivery of a sprawling 670-bed hospital flanked by eight centres of excellence.
The facility has already made incredible breakthroughs in the medical history of India in the form of highly advanced robotic surgeries, 60 of which were successfully completed with phenomenal results within a span of six months. The facility has completed numerous surgeries and procedures establishing itself as a referral centre across the nation and beyond.
In less than a year, Aster Medcity bagged four of the top spots among the CMO ASIA National Awards for Excellence in Healthcare.
Aster Medcity has been planned as an all-encompassing medical township attracting tourists from around the world owing to its high level of care, expertise, connectivity, costs and infrastructure that is on par with international standards. All of this is doubly enhanced by the scenic and intensely therapeutic backdrop of Kerala.
Aster DM Healthcare is further strengthening its mark in India with a multi-speciality 450-bed medical facility in Bangalore - Aster Bangalore, a brown-field project specialising in Neurology/Neurosurgery, Cardiology and Cardiac Sciences, Gastroenterology and Transplants apart from general medical specialties. This facility aims to bring specialised care to the southern part of the city, where the concentration of hospitals and care centres is less than the north.
The Group currently has the capacity of 1,800 beds in India and plans to provide an additional 1,100 beds over the next few years. At Aster DM Healthcare, we understand that while there have been huge strides, there is still a stark gap between healthcare needs and the present delivery of healthcare in India. We hope to set up institutions that will go a long way in changing the face of healthcare in India through research, innovation and technology, while delivering on our brand promise, 'We'll Treat You Well'.  We are committed to building the healthcare landscape of the nation with the knowledge and awareness that the health of the nation is the most valuable asset for our growth, peace and prosperity.
On this momentous occasion of our 69th Independence Day, on behalf of the entire Aster DM Healthcare family, I would like to congratulate my countrymen across the world. I am certain that our vision of seeing India as a global leader in healthcare will soon be a reality.
The author is Chairman and Managing Director of Aster DM Healthcare, one of the largest healthcare conglomerates in the Middle East. He is also the recipient of Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India.
