The clinic, which opened three weeks ago, is also treating professionals with voice disorders.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, Dr Hussain Abdul Rehman, Head of the ENT Department at Rashid Hospital said, “The new centre deals with specific cases and malignant voice disorders which occur in professionals such as teachers, singers and Quran readers and even chain smokers.”

He said that teachers were the most affected lot with the clinic handling up to 10 such cases a day. “Most often they were affected by chronic voice deformities caused by excessive strain on the larynx.”

He said that the loss of voice can have disastrous consequences for professionals.

Dr Yousaf further said that usually attributed the loss of voice to common cold. “So by the time the patient comes to us, his case is between one and three months old. The first treatment given to the patient involves voice therapy sessions,” explained the doctor.

“The larynx is stressed out because most patients put a lot of pressure on it.” Dr Yousaf also said that people need to change their attitude regarding this.
