Confusion over Pak visa facility

DUBAI — The new easy visa policy of Pakistan government that gives “visa on arrival” (VOA) facility to businessmen from 69 countries, may not be actually that easy with UAE businessmen claiming that neither the Pakistan Embassy nor the Pakistan Consulate in Dubai are clear on the issue.

A Pakistan Consulate official, meanwhile, clarified that the VOA facility was available only for those businessmen who are registered with the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Says Sami Abbasi, a UAE national who recently approached the Pakistan Consulate to inquire about the policy as he and his friend wanted to visit the country. “I spoke to someone at the consulate and referred to a recent article published in the local press regarding issuance of visas to UAE nationals as they were in the list of countries that could get visas upon arrival. “

“But I was told that whatever is published in the Press is inaccurate. I am still very confused as I got the same reply from the Pakistan Embassy,” he said.

He also said that the consulate was demanding Dh3,600 for a year’s multiple visa. “I am not willing to pay up so much because the Pakistan government announced that visas would be given to UAE nationals upon arrival. I need to know what is the correct procedure,” he added.

“Even Pakistan International Airlines does not issue a ticket without approval from the consulate. “ he pointed out.

Najeeb Durrani, Head of Chancery at the Pakistan Consulate, while clarifying the issue said for businessmen to visit Pakistan and acquire a visa upon arrival in the country, their company should be registered with the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

“All other businessmen will have to apply for a visa after getting a letter from the commercial counselor in the consulate,” he explained.

In July of 2006, Pakistan announced that businessmen from 69 countries would be given VOA for 30 days validity and also issued a Business Friendly List. The UAE is among the countries listed in the BFL.

However, the visitor to Pakistan must possess the following documents to be eligible for the VOA: Recommendation letter from CC&I of the respective country of the foreigner; invitation letter from business organisation duly recommended by the concerned trade organisation/association in Pakistan and recommendation letter by Honorary Counselor of BOI/Commercial Attache posted at missions abroad.
