“The weather is quite windy in the country due to the cyclone Gonu which is causing sandstorms. Therefore, people, especially those with chronic lung conditions or those prone to allergies, need to take extra care,” said Dr Suresh K.Menon, specialist physician at Jebel Ali Hospital.

“Generally speaking, all people can be affected because of the foreign particles entering the human system. For those who are allergic, particles such as pollen may increase the frequency of allergic symptoms,” said Dr Menon.

Suggesting precautions, Dr Menon said that asthmatic people and those allergic should try and remain indoors if possible. “For those who have to venture out, they can protect themselves by using a towel to cover their faces,” he said.

Dr Menon also suggested the use of a mask. “Using a mask is even better as it has filters. It becomes very handy, especially during this kind of weather,” he said.

For patients already on treatment, Dr Menon suggested: “People already using treatments should ask their doctors to upgrade their dosage during this time as they may need it more.”

Another Sharjah-based general practitioner, Dr Salman M., said, “sneezing, wheezing, nasal congestion and coughing may indicate the increase in respiratory allergies. It may also be indicated by itchy eyes, mouth and throat,” he added.

“The best way is to close all the windows, whether it’s the house or car, and switch on the air-conditioning,” he said, adding that in case the symptoms worsen, the doctor should be consulted immediately.
