Dohms out to recover dues from patients

DUBAI — The tendency of some patients to keep their medical bills unpaid after leaving hospital has drawn flak from the Deparment of Health and Medical Services (Dohms). This has resulted in an increasing number of legal cases in which the erring patients are made to cough up the due amounts.

“We do not deny treatment to any patient coming to any Department of Health and Medical Services (Dohms) hospital at any time, but when they do not pay up, we have the right to take legal action,” said Qadhi Murooshid, Director General of Dohms while speaking to Khaleej Times yesterday.

Referring to a number of cases pending in Civil Prosecution against patients or their sponsors who have not paid Dohms after receiving treatment, Murooshid said, “The amount due to Dohms is not much now. After we initiated legal action, several people have paid up and only a few cases are still in process.”

“We are just like any other company or establishment in this regard. While patients come to us in emergencies, we have never denied them treatment, but after they leave hospital, we have the right to claim the charges if they have not been already cleared,” explained Murooshid.

As per details, 97 of such cases have been referred to court with Dh717,770 due from patients. According to another report, the head of the Civil Prosecution Section in Dubai asked the patients and their sponsors to make the payments to avoid legal procedures after which 17 cases worth Dh100,000 were cleared.

“Our policy is not to put a burden on patients and we give them enough time to pay up so that the court litigation can be avoided,” added Murooshid.
