Giving details about the new rule which allows a committee from the RTA to conduct the final test for a person applying for a driver’s licence, Eng Maitha said, “It is a big project and is still under study. It will take two to three months more and we will follow international practices and set new standards.”

She also said that several main issues were being reconsidered in coordination with Dubai Police. “We will soon hold a meeting with driving schools and explain our requirements to them,” she said. As per the rule, certified training centres will only be responsible for qualifying an applicant to being issued a licence.

On other safety measures taken by RTA in coordination with Dubai Police, Eng Maitha said that more radar cameras would soon be fixed at major junctions across the city.

“At each junction, on both sides of the road, 1,200 cameras will be fixed for red lights, 200 fixed cameras will be installed while 40 mobile cameras will also be there for the whole emirate,” she said.

For the safety of pedestrians, she said a sum of Dh70 million was being spent on constructing foot bridges.
