Director of Dubai Hospital, Dr Abdul Razzaq Al Madani, said that the number of beds in the Special Baby Care Unit (SBCU) had been increased to accommodate the referrals of expectant mothers and premature babies. “There is no problem accommodating them, however, because we have made all the arrangements,” he said.
The decision has been taken following the death of a premature Syrian twin baby boy on January 4 after being falling ill due a bacterial infection.
His brother and two other infants were also extremely sick due to the infection caused by the Serratia Marcescens bacteria can be fatal at times.
The Medical Director of Dubai hospital, Dr Hussain Abdul Rahman, giving a break up of the increase, said that 15 more beds had been added to the SCBU while another 10 had been added to the maternity unit.
“We have divided the pediatric unit and made it a step down unit (maternity ward) next to the pediatric ward and added 10 more beds to the existing 60. This unit if for newborns without medical problems who are allowed to stay with their mothers soon after birth,” he explained.
Dr Rahman also said that15 more beds had been added to the existing 30 in the SCBU. “This is the special care unit where premature babies are given special attention,” he said.
Dr Abdullah Al Khayat, Director of Al Wasl Hospital, confirmed on Sunday that the three other infected infants were now out of danger.
