The ‘evergreen’ Bollywood actor, on his first visit to Dubai yesterday in connection with the release of his autobiography Romancing with Life, said he was amazed with the strides made by Dubai. “I am amazed with the development and rapid growth achieved by this city. I have been hearing a lot about Dubai. But I never thought it would be wonderful like this. Definitely this is one of the best cities I have visited,” Dev Anand said at a Press conference yesterday.

The man known for his starry mannerisms — sing-song dialogue delivery, puff in his hair and total nonchalance — and compelling performances in movies like Guide, Kala Pani, Hum Dono and Jewel Thief couldn’t have stopped speaking about films.

Describing the transformation of Indian cinema as positive, Dev Anand said: “We have lots of good actors, directors and technicians. Indian cinema is attracting more global audience than before and I think everything is on the right track.”

Asked whether Bollywood will be able to compete with Hollywood, Dev Anand said: “There is no question about competition. It does not matter whether it is Bollywood or Hollywood. The only important factor is whether it is a good cinema or not. For a good cinema, there will always be an audience.”

“Writing my autobiography has been very challenging. It was hard to put my thoughts and experience on paper. But I am satisfied that I have managed to do it,” said the suave legend, expressing jubilation over the good response the book has received from his fans and people in general.

He said cinema is the most popular and strong medium to convey a social message. “And I feel it is a privilege to be a part of this industry where I have not only enjoyed a long career but have always learnt a lot in return,” said Dev Anand, hoping to contribute more in the future.
